Student ‘surfed for porn using Mandy’s name’ (02.02.03)

A WELSH student has been quizzed by cops for allegedly surfing child porn sites using the name of former Cabinet minister Peter Mandelson.

He has been targeted as part of the Operation Ore probe into more than 7,000 British users of a sick internet portal in America.

And before moving in on him, cops had to carry out a top-level secret inquiry to make sure Mr Mandelson was not involved.

Police working their way through a suspects list supplied by the FBI were stunned to find the former Trade Secretary’s name.

Several high-profile figures, including rock legend Pete Townshend, had already become embroiled in the investigation.

But police found that Mr Mandelson’s name had only been given when a site called Real Lolita was entered. There was a different name on the credit card used to access pictures of sex abuse involving children as young as six.

They raided the student’s home in west Wales and took away his computer for examination. So far nothing has been found.

There is no suggestion that the real Peter Mandelson is involved.

A police source said: “There was an immediate top level and very discreet inquiry carried out when Mr Mandelson’s name came up.

“This is the difficulty of this operation when people use false names.”

A relative of the student said: “There’s no way he did this. What I think has happened is that someone has stolen our credit card details and used them to get on to this site.”

    ‘Mandelson’ mask terrifies the kids.

Rivals call Labour spin doctor Peter Mandelson the Prince of Darkness but could he really be hamming it?

Burger King’s Hallowe’en horror masks and blood-thirsty vampires in coffins are supposed to look like Dracula.

But mortified munchers say the ghoulish image is a dead ringer for the Minister Without Portfolio.

Peter – or rather Dracula – comes free of charge with children’s meals at Burger King restaurants. He is one of four ghoulish masks and plastic figures to mark Hallowe’en. The others are Wolf Man, Frankenstein and the Creature From The Black Lagoon.

Sports Minister Tony Banks hinted at a skeleton in Peter’s closet at the Labour conference when he made the sign of the cross behind Peter’s back.

And a spokesman for Burger King said: “It’s a coincidence but now you mention it there is a resemblance between our Dracula toys and Mr Mandelson.”

British minister embroiled in fresh gay storm

London, Mon – Press interest in and concern with the sexuality of British government figures was denounced today, after a top Cabinet minister was alleged to have visited gay haunts during an official trip to Brazil.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson, seen as a prime architect of the moderate “New” Labour government of Prime Minister Tony Blair, was in the headlines last month when he was named, or “outed”, as a homosexual.

Now the political magazine Punch has alleged that Mandelson toured gay bars and nightclubs in Rio de Janeiro in July in the company of the director of the local British Council, the official British cultural body and former BBC journalist Martin Dowle.

However, Dowle today categorically denied the allegations.

“I think that Peter and myself have been the victims of a horrendous smear campaign that is like something out of Kafka,” he said.

Last week the leader of the Conservative opposition William Hague had appeared to endorse the homosexual allegations dogging Mandelson in Press reports. – AFP

    RADIO DIANA FOR KIDS.

A NEW national radio station for children named after Princess Diana may be set up as a permanent memorial to her.

Susan Stranks, former presenter of children’s TV show Magpie, and Labour MP Phil Woolas have put the plan for Radio Diana to Chancellor Gordon Brown who chairs her memorial committee. And he is “seriously considering” the proposal which would involve pumping in pounds 20 million of public donations to give under-eights their own programmes.

The Chancellor has already written to Mr Woolas confirming his interest in the project. It could even broadcast from the Millennium Dome in London’s Greenwich as project leader, Minister Without Portfolio Peter Mandelson, wants children to play their part.

Susan Stranks, director of Children 2000, the organisation behind the project, has been fighting to get the Radio Authority to give her their spare long wave 225kHz frequency to launch her children’s radio network providing learning and leisure for under-6s.

But the Authority refused to supply the waveband because of European objections that it would interfere with existing radio services.

Now supporters of children’s radio who include Premier Tony Blair’s wife, Cherie, are pinning their hopes on new digital technology.

“The Millennium Dome, as a centre for children’s activities and for the digital revolution, could provide a superb platform for children’s broadcasting,” said Mr Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth.

Although the network would cost pounds 44 million over four years, that works out at just 2p per child per week for Britain’s 11 million children who make up a fifth of the population.

So Children 2000 is asking for cash from Diana’s Memorial Fund, the New Opportunities Fund for out-of-school activities financed by the midweek Lottery, and from commerce.

The eventual aim is for the network to become self-financing through advertising and sponsorship.

Susan also needs another pounds 20 million to set up a string of Diana Day Centres for parents and children.

The staff would be highly-trained in child care, health and education, providing day care for pre-school children and their parents and after-school clubs.
