Thirty years in jail for pedophile who promoted child sex (13.02.02)

Agence France Presse, 13th February 2002

A French pedophile who once called in a newspaper article for children to be sodomised and promoted sex attacks on children on the Internet began a 30-year prison term Wednesday.

Jacques Dugue, 66, was sentenced as a recidivist sex criminal Tuesday after a court, meeting behind closed doors, heard that he had raped and molested two minors, the children of one of his previous victims.
He had previously been convicted of pedophile offences in 1981 and 1983 and had been sentenced to eight years in jail in 1990.

The court heard that police investigating Dugue found a message from him on the computer of a US pedophile that read: “We must pervert children so that a new generation of perverts can take over where we leave off.”

Dugue enjoyed brief notoriety in January 1979 when the left-wing daily Liberation published an article in which he defended “a friend” who, he said, regularly raped his own 11-year-old stepson.

“The kid himself would ask to be sodomised and took a real pleasure in it, both physically and as affection,” he wrote.

He added that children treated in such as way were “better balanced and happier than the little thugs brought up by intolerant heterosexuals.”

At the case this week Dugue admitted he had fondled the children but denied rape.

The children’s father, identified only as Jean-Michel, and their mother refused to pursue charges against him put the case was brought at the request of local social services.

Jean-Michel had previously been identified as the victim in one of Dugue’s earlier trials but still lived next door to him in the Alpine town Chambery and allowed his children to go skiing with their “Granpa Jacques”.

    Pornography Ring Broken

PARIS (AP) – Acting on a tip from Los Angeles police, the French vice squad says it has broken up a child pornography ring involving 15 minors and run by a 43-year-old sports instructor. [Jacques Dugue]

Police said they raided a villa in a Paris suburb last September and found two young boys posing for pornographic films in the basement. They said they arrested and were still holding a sports instructor along with several other suspects.

Man wants seized porn photos back

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – John Michael Lewis, a U.S. citizen who recently won the right to stay in Canada despite sex-related charges in the United States, has applied for the return of thousands of pornographic photographs from the Vancouver police.

Lewis’s lawyer, Dennis McCrea, told a provincial court judge the Criminal Code requires police to return the material – photographic prints, slides and negatives – if there are no outstanding court proceedings against Lewis in Canada.

However, Catherine Kinahan, the lawyer representing the police, sad the material includes obscene photos of boys as young as 8 years old engaged in homosexual acts.

“Our position is that this person is preying on young boys and young teens, and these people ought to be protected by the court,” said Kinahan.

She said the police are concerned the material might be destroyed if returned to Lewis because it may contain potential evidence against him relating to charges he still faces in the United States.

Police are also concerned some of the material might be published if released to Lewis, she said.

Police seized the material from Lewis’ Vancouver residence at the request of a Los Angeles detective investigating a child sex and pornography ring.

No criminal convictions resulted from the investigation, but Lewis admitted a series of sex-related offenses in 1978 and still has sex charges outstanding against him in the Los Angeles area.

    500 child porn films confiscated

LOS ANGELES (UPI) – Authorities seized more than 500 child pornographic films Thursday and arrested five persons, including a woman purportedly to be one of the largest distributors of child pornography in the nation.

The sheriff’s department said the arrests, which culminated a four month investigation, were the first under a recently enacted child pornography law signed by Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr, which makes it a felony to distribute such films.

Deputies said some 500 films were confiscated at the home of Katerine Wilson, the alleged ringleader of the child pornography operation.

Arrested in raids at the same time were David R. Cornwall, 31, Hollywood; Abraham Susskind, 69. West Hollywood; Lucius Wilson. 43 and James Talmadge, 32, Burbank. Some 41 additional films were seized at the homes of the other four suspects.

All five were booked on suspicion of conspiracy to distribute child pornography. Bail was set at $500,000 for each suspect.

Deputies said that during the course of their investigation, undercover officers posing as wholesalers bought approximately 200 films at $8 each. The films had a street value at from $50 to $100, according to Lt. Robert Grimm of the sheriff’s vice squad.

Grimm said the subjects in the 8mm silent films were boys and girls aged 8 to 16.

He said some were believed to have been filmed in foreign countries.

The child pornography law, signed by the governor last week as emergency legislation taking effect immediately, changed distribution of such pornography from a misdemeanor to a felony.

Cops say nation’s top child-porn ring busted

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother of five who allegedly was responsible for distributing 80 percent of the nation’s child pornography has been arrested after a painstaking investigation that spanned a decade.

The operation, described by authorities as the largest known pornography ring in the nation, allegedly brought the woman who ran it a half-million dollars a year, although she collected welfare, authorities said.

In addition to photographs of children engaged in sex, the organization distributed photographs of forced sex and maiming, officials said. Children involved were as young as 6, officials said.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 43, of Los Angeles was booked Wednesday for investigation of felony distribution of child pornography, Los Angeles Police Commander William Booth said Friday. Alleged accomplice, Richard Eugene Trolio, 42, also of Los Angeles, was also booked. He and Ms. Wilson were released on $5,000 bail each, Booth said.

“It is believed she is responsible for 80 percent of the distribution of child pornography in the country,” Booth said.

We seized over 200 original copies of pornographic film, he said, adding that a list of 30,000 buyers of the material was in police hands.

Detectives said Ms. Wilson’s customers received brochures, then sent orders to a company in Denmark that was a front. In Denmark, an accomplice coded the orders and sent them back to Ms. Wilson, said Detective William Spradley of the vice division. Customers received reproductions made in California, not materials directly from Denmark, Booth said.

Payments were funneled into banks in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, police said.

The FBI, police and U.S. postal authorities began to realize the magnitude of the ring, known as the Jackie Steen company in the early 1970s, officers said.

Charges by the district attorney are expected to be filed next week, police said. Arraignment is scheduled for May 19. The case also will be given to a federal grand jury for possible indictment on federal charges.

Ms. Wilson received a gross salary of $525,000 annually from the operation, Booth said. She drove a Cadillac, a Rolls Royce and a Lincoln, and was receiving welfare payments, he added. Police also said she had extensive property holdings in the Los Angeles area.

Police said Ms. Wilson was convicted in 1978 for distribution of obscene material, and is on probation. They said Trolio was fined $10,000 and put on five years probation for interstate distribution of child pornography.

Mother called dominant distributor of kid porn

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother of five who allegedly was responsible for distributing 80 percent of the nation’s child pornography has been arrested after a painstaking investigation that spanned a decade.

The operation, described by authorities as the largest known pornography ring in the nation, allegedly brought the woman who ran it a half-million dollars a year, although she collected welfare, authorities said.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 43, of Los Angeles was booked Wednesday for investigation of felony distribution of child pornography, Los Angeles Police Commander William Booth said Friday.

An alleged accomplice, Richard Eugene Trolio, 42, also of Los Angeles, was booked for investigation of the same charge. He and Ms. Wilson were released on $5,000 bail each, Booth said.

“It is believed she is responsible for 80 percent of the distribution of child pornography in the country,” Booth said.

Detectives said Ms. Wilson’s customers received brochures, then sent orders to a company in Denmark that was a “front.”

“She set up this bogus company to hide the trail,” Booth said.

In Denmark, an accomplice coded the orders and sent them back to Ms. Wilson, said Detective William Spradley of the vice division.

A Hollywood-area film processing laboratory made copies of master prints from Denmark or European countries, which were kept in a warehouse in Chatsworth, Calif., Booth said. Customers would receive the reproductions made in California, not materials directly from Denmark, he said.

Payments were funneled into banks in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, police said.

The FBI, police and U.S. postal authorities began to realize the magnitude of the ring, known as the Jackie Steen company in the early 1970s, officers said.

“However, they soon learned that Wilson was so well insulated that even minute evidence-gathering was virtually impossible,” said a statement from the police department vice squad.

Authorities collected evidence for years through fictitious addresses and post office boxes throughout the country. Last November, they learned that a postal agent had received an unsolicited advertisement with a Van Nuys postmark and a return address in the Canoga Park area of the San Fernando Valley.

The ad was for animal pornography, officials said.

Police said the box was watched and they observed a woman pick up the mail and take it to Trolio’s home in neighboring Woodland Hills.

Trolio also picked up orders from a post office box in Palm Desert and one in Huntington Park, police said.

On April 6, authorities linked Trolio to Ms. Wilson when the two met in a parking lot in Hollywood and exchanged money and papers, the police statement said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Nine felony charges will be dropped against a Woodland Hills man who has promised to testify against the alleged leader of a major child pornography ring, a prosecutor says.

Richard Eugene Trolio, 42, pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography. Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin said the maximum penalty is four years in prison, but that Trolio also has been guarenteed a sentence of no more than one year. He is to testify against Catherine Stubblefield Wilson who allegedly controls 80 percent of the nation’s child pornography. She is accused of 13 felonies.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother of five charged with leading the nation’s largest child pornography ring has been released on bond, authorities say.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 43, who also is a grandmother, had been held in lieu of $500,000 bail since her arrest May 17, when authorities said they cracked the pornography ring that served customers in the United States, Canada and Denmark.

Authorities have said Ms. Wilson’s arrest broke up the largest “kiddie porn” distribution network in the nation. Police Chief Daryl Gates has said the ring grossed about $525,000 a year.

Superior Court Judge Diane Wayne released Ms. Wilson Friday.

    Child sex film charges filed

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A woman identified by local authorities as the nation’s largest distributor of child pornography has been charged in a 15-count federal indictment alleging interstate distribution of films showing children involved in sex.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 43, already awaiting trial on child pornography charges in county Superior Court, was accused in the indictment Thursday of mailing “obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy and vile films depicting children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.”

The federal indictment alleged the mother of five had distributed two Super-8mm films, “Kinder Orgie” and “Randy Lolitas,” that featured children engaged in heterosexual and homosexual activities as well as simulated or actual oral sex, masturbation and sexual intercourse.

Authorities trying to arrest Ms. Wilson on Thursday did not find her at her Wilshire-area home. She had been released from jail early this year on previous charges when she posted $500,000 in bond.

U.S. Attorney Stephen S. Trott said Thursday’s indictment resulted from a 10-year investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI. The agencies had been probing Ms. Wilson’s businesses, known as Jackie Steen and BBC Star Inc.

When Ms. Wilson was arrested May 6, 1982, on local charges, she was described as the largest distributor of child pornography in the nation and was said to have made millions of dollars in her illicit operation.

Ms. Wilson faces up to 85 years in prison and a fine of $85,000 if convicted on the 15 federal counts.

In November, she pleaded innocent to the 15 local counts of distributing obscene material. Later, the number of counts was reduced to 13 – 10 felonies and three misdemeanors.

When Ms. Wilson was arrested last May, authorities said they found mailing lists of 30,000 names at her home.

At that time, Ms. Wilson was on probation from a 1980 child pornography offense.

Nation’s top child pornographer ordered bestiality films, jury told

LOS ANGELES – Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, labeled by authorities as the nation’s leading child pornographer, placed orders for films showing sex acts involving children and animals, a witness at her trial testified Wednesday.

In the second day of Ms. Wilson’s federal court trial, prosecutors said they would show the jury such films as “Kinder orgy” and “Randy Lolitas” as examples of pornography that she allegedly mailed to thousands of customers.

Confessed child pornographer Richard Eugene Trolio, the government’s star witness against Ms. Wilson, 43, testified that he began working with the mother of five in the fall of 1981.

He said he took a number of orders from Ms. Wilson for films he described as “child pornography and bestiality films, mostly.”

Kiddie porn trial ends in deadlock

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The lone juror who forced a mistrial in the case of a woman accused of running the nation’s biggest child pornography ring was inattentive and favored the defendant even before he joined deliberations, angry prosecutors charged.

The trial of Catherine Stubblefield Wilson ended in an 11-1 deadlock Tuesday after the juror sent the judge a note saying there was “no chance” he would ever vote to convict.

The trial of Catherine Stubblefield Wilson ended in an 11-1 deadlock Tuesday after the juror sent the judge a note saying there was “no chance” he would ever vote to convict.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gadbois Jr. scheduled a new trial Jan. 17 for Ms. Wilson on 15 counts of distributing obscene material and exploiting children. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 85 years in prison and an $85,000 fine.

Investigators say the 43-year-old mother of five drove a Rolls-Royce and received food stamps while earning $500,000 a year from an empire that controlled 80 percent of the U.S. child pornography market.

Gadbois said it became apparent the jury was on the verge of a deadlock Monday when juror Sanford A. Ross sent him a note saying his mind was set.

“There is no chance of an unanimous decision on this jury,” Ross wrote in his note, released by the court following the mistrial. “Nothing will change my mind to convict the defendant Wilson.”

He added, “Please don’t waste any more time. I shall not vote for anything but acquittal on all 15 counts.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joyce Karlin said Ross “apparently made up his mind before he joined the deliberations.” She charged he “did not hear the tapes, would not review the evidence and was consistently late to court, and he referred to witnesses who never testified.”

“He said he didn’t believe law enforcement officers. He made up his mind he wasn’t going to vote guilty, no matter what,” Ms. Karlin added.

Other jurors confirmed some of what Ms. Karlin reported.

“It wasn’t that he refused to deliberate,” said juror Rick Oland. “He just said there was something in his convictions that didn’t allow him to vote guilty.”

Ross was not immediately available for comment; no phone number was listed under his name in Orange County, where he lives.

Jurors got the case Friday after a three-day trial and on Monday asked to rehear a tape recording of a conversation allegedly between Ms. Wilson and convicted pornographer Richard Eugene Trolio, the prosecution’s star witness. Trolio said the tape had Ms. Wilson asking him for copies of films showing pornography and bestiality.

Prosecutors alleged that Ms. Wilson, doing business as B.B.C. Star Inc. and Jackie Star [Steen], distributed child pornography films and brochures by mail to thousands of customers.

Over defense objections, the jury watched two films which a postal investigator said he had ordered from Ms. Wilson. Jurors squirmed during the screenings of “Randy Lolitas” and “Kinder Orgy,” which showed children as young as 9 engaged in sexual activities.

Ms. Wilson’s attorney, Deputy Federal Public Defender Janet I. Levine, argued there was no direct proof that Ms. Wilson had mailed the specific brochures and films presented by prosecutors as evidence. However, she did not try to prove that the films were not obscene or that Ms. Wilson had never been involved in pornography.

Trolio, who agreed to cooperate with the government in a plea bargain after being arrested in April 1982 on separate pornography charges, testified he began working with Ms. Wilson in the fall of 1981, taking orders from her for “child pornography and bestiality films, mostly.”

Ms. Wilson is free on $500,000 bail pending a Nov. 4 trial on state charges of distributing pornography. In 1980 she received a three-year suspended sentence on a 1978 pornography distribution conviction

Guilty plea entered in kiddie porn case
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother of five, dubbed the nation’s :kiddie porn queen” by prosecutors, faces up to four years in prison and a fedral trial that could bring another 85 years behind bars after pleading guilty to distributing child pornography.

“Guilty,” Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 44, murmured Tuesday in the surprise plea before state Superior Court Judge Diane Wayne. The judge set sentencing for April 12, about a week after Wilson’s retrial on separate federal charges is to begin.

“We felt we had a strong case all along,” said Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin, who added that she was delighted by the defendant’s decision to plead guilty, because it would save the state the cost of prosecuting her.

Prosecutors alleged that Wilson’s mail-order pornography business controlled 80 percent of the U.S. market for movies of explicit sex involving children. She made $500,000 a year from the business, they said.

The films and literature, about a decade old and apparently made in Scandinavia, showed children as young as 6 engaging in sex acts with one another, adults and animals, Rubin said. Wilson was not accused of making the films.

Neither Wilson nor her attorney, Stewart Goldfarb, would comment as they left the courthouse.

Although three misdemeanor counts of possessing obscene materials will be dropped, Wilson could face up to 85 more years in prison and $85,000 in fines if convicted on federal charges of unlawfully using the mail system and violating the Child Exploitation Act.

Wilson entered the guilty plea on the day her trial was to begin, after a series of conferences between attorneys and the judge.

In October, a U.S. District Court jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction. A mistrial was declared and retrial set for April 3.

Wilson also faces state charges that she violated probation and illegally received $12,000 in welfare payments between 1980 and 1982. When arrested in May 1982, she was on probation from a 1980 child pornography conviction for which she had received a two-year suspended sentence, three years’ probation and a $3,750 fine.

Wilson solicited business by writing people known to have previously bought pornography and inviting them to join her “club” by mailing $3 to a Danish address for a brochure on films and literature, Rubin said.

Payments were sent to another address in Denmark. Danish contacts forwarded orders to Wilson and sent her money through banks in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands, Rubin said.

The banks sent her weekly checks of $990, small enough that they were unlikely to trigger authorities curiosity, Rubin said.

Wilson was linked to the business after a postal official found himself on a mailing list offering the pornography and traced it to Richard Trolio of Woodland Hills, Calif., who offered to testify against Wilson, prosecutors said.

Trolio, a key witness at Wilson’s federal trial last year, is awaiting sentencing in state court for distributing pornography.

Wilson has been free since posting $1.1 million in equity and real property, Rubin said.

Child porn suspect admits guilt hours before start of trial

LOS ANGELES (UPI) – A woman accused of running the nation’s largest child pornography operation pleaded guilty to a felony charge hours before start of her trial.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 44, a mother of five, unexpectedly entered the guilty plea Tuesday before the start of her trial on distributing child pornography and possessing obscene materials.

Mrs. Wilson, who still faces federal pornography charges that could lead to 85 years in prison, faces up to four years in prison on Tuesday’s guilty plea.

Superior Court Judge Diane Wayne released Mrs. Wilson on $1.1 million bail pending sentencing April 12.

“I’m delighted,” Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin said. “I think she changed her mind and pleaded guilty because the evidence against her was overwhelming.”

Authorities said Mrs. Wilson’s business operated out of two post office boxes in Denmark and Sweden, and that the operation netted more than $500,000 a year and supplied 80 percent of the child pornography in the United States.

When she was arrested in May 1982, police seized a 400-page mailing list – stashed in youngest child’s crib – with 500,000 names. Officers also confiscated hundreds of films and magazines depicting youngsters between the ages of 6 and 12 engaged in various sexual acts.

Mrs. Wilson, who lives in a mansion in the exclusive Hancock Park area of Los Angeles and drove a RollsRoyce while allegedly collecting $600 a month in food stamps, pleaded guilty in 1981 to child pornography charges and was placed on probation.

She is scheduled for trial in Superior Court March 27 on forgery and welfare fraud charges.

In the federal court case, Mrs. Wilson is charged with interstate distribution of obscene material and violation of the child exploitation act. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 85 years in jail and an $85,000 fine.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gadbois declared a mistrial in that case last october after jurors deadlocked 11-1 for conviction. The second trial is set for April 3.

‘Kiddie Porn Queen’ Has Bond revoked

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A woman dubbed the “kiddie porn queen” was in jail Friday after two men who feared she planned to flee the country withdrew property deeds used to help cover her $1 million bail.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, a 44-year-old mother of five, faces sentencing April 12 for her guilty plea in Superior Court on Feb. 13 to a charge of distributing child pornography. She could be sentenced to four years in prison.

There was no indication Friday that anyone had come forward to cover the $270,000 worth of property removed from her bond account, said Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin.

The two men who put up the property, Brice Calhoun and Ronald Burton, asked Superior Court Judge Jack E. Goertzen on Thursday to remove the property so they could recover their deeds. He granted the request, and Mrs. Wilson was arrested.

“One of them (Calhoun) had known her for quite some time and believed her behavior was recently very peculiar,” Ms. Rubin said Friday.

Ms. Rubin said she believed Mrs. Wilson planned to leave the country, because there was evidence she had bank accounts in both Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

Mrs. Wilson also is awaiting a May retrial in federal court on charges of using the mail system unlawfully and violating the federal Child Exploitation Act.

Conviction on those charges could bring her a sentence of up to 85 years in prison. In October a jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction, leading to a declaration of mistrial.

Mrs. Wilson was arrested in May of 1982 after an informant led authorities to her. Prosecutors called her the “kiddie porn queen,” alleging she used a mail-order business to control 80 percent of the U.S. market for movies of explicit sex among children.

She purportedly made $500,000 a year from the business, prosecutors said.

Prosecutor Claims Porn Probe At Preschool ‘Just Beginning’

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Children’s claims that they were photographed in sex acts and “touched by strangers” could spark an expanded inquiry of child pornography and prostitution at a preschool where seven workers were arrested on abuse charges, a prosecutor said yesterday.

“Profit certainly is an aspect we’re investigating… It’s my feeling that the investigation is just beginning,” said Deputy District Atty. Lael Rubin, chief prosecutor in the case.

At least 125 children formerly enrolled in the Virginia McMartin Preschool in Manhattan Beach said they were forced into pornographic photo sessions with themselves and strangers under the guise of playing “Naked Movie Star” or “The Hollywood Game,” investigators said.

The youngsters’ claims mean “the case has grown to much greater proportions” than when the school’s 76-year-old founder and six teachers were indicted, Ms. Rubin said.

The indictment alleged 18 children were raped, sodomized, forced to submit to oral copulation or fondling since 1973 and were silenced by seeing the school’s pet birds, rabbits and turtles mutilated.

Dozens more children told investigators they also were victimized and prosecutors said more charges are possible as the investigation continues.

Ms. Rubin prosecuted Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, the “kiddie porn queen” who pleaded guilty in February to distributing child pornography.

Ms. Rubin was assigned to the preschool case in part because of her experience with “child pornography cases and the unique type of bail motion” submitted for three defendants, district attorney spokesman Al Albergate said.

In Superior Court motions filed Tuesday, Ms. Rubin asked that bail be revoked for three teachers still in custody on grounds that their release “would exacerbate the psychological harm” to their alleged victims.

The no-bail motion names Raymond Buckey, 25, charged with 75 of the 115 counts the county grand jury handed down March 22; his mother Peggy McMartin Buckey, 57, charged with 15 counts, and Betty Raidor, 64, charged with 12 counts.

Four other defendants are free on bail: Peggy Ann Buckey, 28, one count; Babette spitler, 36, six counts; Mary Ann Jackson, 56, five counts; and Virginia McMartin, who started the school 28 years ago, one count.

All seven defendants face arraignment April 6, when Superior Court Judge Ronald George will be asked to determine whether bail money was illegally obtained.

The affidavit for the no-bail motion quoted Kee McFarlane, a social worker at Children’s Institute International, as saying 125 children told her of being filmed nude in games like “Naked Movie Star.”

“It is my belief that these photogrpahs and movies were taken for commercial purposes,” said Eleanor Barrett, another prosecutor.

“Because so many children talk about being photographed on so many occasions, a vast quantity of photographs would be produced,” she said. “The millions of child pornography photographs and films would produce a substantial revenue in the underground market.”

‘Kiddie porn queen’ may be out after nine months

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) – Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, who allegedly controlled 80 percent of the U.S. market for explicit sex films involving children, could be paroled after nine months of a four-year prison term for distributing child pornography, prosecutors say.

The 44-year-old mother of five, whom prosecutors dubbed the “kiddie porn queen,” received the maximum sentence Tuesday for the single count to which she had pleaded guilty.

But since Wilson has already served 488 days since her May 1982 arrest, she will be eligible for parole in about nine months, said Al Albergate, a spokesman for the district attorney.

“I think it is a real outrage that she will now probably only spend another nine months in state prison for these charges,” Deputy District Attorney Lael Rubin said.

Wilson, who prosecutors said earned $500,000 a year from child pornography, had pleaded guilty to a single felony count on Feb. 14, the day her trial was scheduled to begin.

Wilson’s attorney, Bernard Winsberg, said the manufacturers of child pornography are more culpable than his client.

The prosecutor urged the state Legislature to stiffen the penalty for distributing child pornography.

Wilson, whose mail-order business allegedly earned her $500,000 a year, pleaded guilty to the single felony count on Feb. 14, the day her trial was scheduled to begin.

“The sophistication and professionalism, the nature of the crime carried out, the fact it involved a great deal of contraband and that she violated probation mandate the maximum sentence,” Judge Diane Wayne said in pronouncing sentence in this city 12 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

The judge also sentenced Wilson to two years in prison for violating the probation she received in 1980 for a conviction of child pornography, but ordered that term to run concurrently with the longer sentence.

Wilson could end up spending much more time in prison if convicted of pending federal charges, including violating the Child Exploitation Act, which carry a maximum sentence of 85 years in prison and $85,000 in fines.

A retrial on the federal charges is scheduled to begin June 12. Wilson’s first U.S. District Court trial ended with jurors deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction.

The federal trial featured screenings of two films Wilson allegedly distributed.

After her initial arrest, Wilson was freed for several months on $500,000 bail she made by posting $1 million worth of equity and property, some of it belonging to her friends.

Mother convicted on child porn film counts

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A mother of five who testified she had never seen a child pornography film has been convicted on 15 counts of distributing pornographic movies allegedly involving children as young as 3.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, 45, showed no emotion as U.S. District Judge Richard A. Gadbois Jr. read his verdict Friday in her non-jury trial.

“I may be guilty of obstructing justice, but I did not distribute films (through the) mail,” Ms. Wilson testified.

Ms. Wilson was accused of heading the largest child pornography mail order operation in the nation. Prosecutors said she controlled about 80 percent of the U.S. market for films of explicit sex with children and made $500,000 a year off the business in 1981 and 1982.

“Since she was arrested in 1982 there has been no commercial distribution of child pornography anywhere in the country,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Joyce Karlin said. “Her arrest shut down the operation that was responsible for distributing almost all child pornography sent through the U.S. mails.”

Ms. Karlin said Ms. Wilson kept a list of 30,000 customers in the United States, Canada, Britain and Denmark and used various post offices in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas to mail brochures and films to customers.

Ms. Wilson, arrested in May 1982, did not produce child pornography films, investigators said, but copied films made in Denmark, some of which involved children as young as 3.

Gadbois found Ms. Wilson guilty of 13 counts of illegal mail distribution and two counts of violating the Child Exploitation Act. He set sentencing for July 20 and ordered Ms. Wilson held until then. She faces a maximum federal sentence of 85 years in prison and a fine of $85,000.

Ms. Wilson’s first trial on the charges ended in a hung jury. She waived her right to a jury trial on June 20, chose to let the transcript of her first trial stand and testified in her defense. She is already serving a four-year state prison sentence for possession of pornographic films.

Richard Trolio, 44, who also was part of the pornography operation, was a key witness against Ms. Wilson and had secretly recorded conversations with her. He is on probation after pleading guilty to a state pornography charge.

Grandmother gets 10-year sentence for ‘kiddie porn’

LOS ANGELES (UPI) – A grandmother labeled the “kiddie porn queen” for her role as head of the nation’s biggest child-pornography distribution ring has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.

Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, a mother of four, was given the sentence Friday by U.S. District Judge Richard Gadbois after she insisted she had done nothing worse than “selling toothpaste or cigarettes” and her lawyer vainly argued she should serve her time in a halfway house.

Gadbois, instead, favored the government’s contention that Wilson alone was responsible for an international operation that at one time handled 80 per cent of the child pornography circulating nationwide.

The 44-year-old woman was convicted after a one-day trial last month for violating the Child Exploitation Act and mailing obscene material. She reportedly netted more than $500,000 a year from the mail-order business operating out of her home.

She allegedly obtained lists of known pornography buyers and mailed them “welcome letters” inviting them to join her “club” by sending $3 to an address in Denmark for a brochure describing available films and literature.

Those ordering material were told to send payments to another address in Denmark, where associates forwarded the requests to Wilson and sent money to her via banks in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

Wilson reportedly distributed up to 500 X-rated films a month, each costing about $30, to her customers.

A list containing 5,000 names of customers was found by officers raiding her home, postal inspector Bill Anderson said. The list was distributed to postal inspectors nationwide, who are now investigating the recipients of her material.

The defendant, protesting her innocence, told the judge she considered the sale of pornography the same as selling any other commonplace commodity.

“It’s just like a lot of things, like selling toothpaste or cigarettes.”

    ‘Kiddie porn queen’ is sentenced

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, convicted on state and federal child pornography charges and dubbed the “kiddie porn queen” by prosecutors, pleaded no contest to welfare fraud and perjury, the district attorney’s office said Friday.

The five counts of perjury and one of welfare fraud accused Ms. Wilson, 44, of illegally receiving $12,202 in welfare funds at a time when she was allegedly earning more than $545,000 a year by distributing 80 percent of the nation’s child pornography.

After accepting Ms. Wilson’s plea late Thursday, Superior Court Judge Everett Ricks immediately sentenced Ms. Wilson to five years and eight months in prison.

A no contest plea is like a guilty plea, but cannot be used as admission of responsibility in any civil suit that may stem from the case.

The welfare fraud sentence, like the four-year state prison sentence Ms. Wilson received for one count of distributing child pornography, will be served concurrently with her two concurrent 10-year terms on two federal counts of mailing obscene materials.

County records showed Ms. Wilson, a grandmother with five children of her own, had been getting an average of $600 a month for two years in benefits for herself and three children.

In the federal case, Ms. Wilson was convicted in a non-jury trial in June, and sentenced last Friday by U.S. District Judge Richard Gadbois Jr., who also fined her $20,000.

Roth: He recommends tougher laws against child pornography

You usually can’t prove the age of a kid without the kid. [And without the victim and proof of age], you can’t prosecute an abuser under state child pornography statutes.” Howell also points out that local laws vary widely from state to state, and there are massive loopholes. Additionally, he makes this serious charge: that most local jurisdictions – and the federal government – have actually placed child pornography prosecutions on a back burner, despite all the “crackdown” claims.

What’s more, often very little happens at the state level. In California, for example, the law requires that a court must rule child pornography to be “utterly without redeeming social value.” It’s the word “utterly” that causes problems in court, prompting prosecutors to charge most child pornographers with other crimes. “You have to have a full 12 people on a jury agree on a definition of obscenity,” explains Los Angeles Police Detective Don Smith, who in 1980 helped crack a multimillion dollar child pornography distribution network with the arrest of Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, the so-called “Queen of Kiddie Porn.”…

The San Bernardino County Sun – 17 June 1983

LOS ANGELES – Catherine Stubblefield Wilson, described as a major distributor of child pornography, was charged Thursday in a 15-count federal indictment alleging interstate distribution of films and brochures showing children involved in sex.

The 43-year-old mother of five, already awaiting trial on child pornography charges in county Superior Court, was accused in the indictment of mailing “obscene, lewd, lascivious, indecent, filthy and vile films depicting children engaged in sexually explicit conduct.”

The indictment specifically alleged that she had distributed two super 8mm films, “Kinder Orgie” and “Randy Lolitas,” that featured children engaged in both heterosexual and homosexual activities as well as simulated or actual oral sex, masturbation and sexual intercourse.

U.S. Attorney Stephen S. Trott said the indictment was the product of a 10-year investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI. The agencies had been probing Wilson’s businesses known as Jackie Steen and BBC Star Inc.

When Wilson was arrested by Los Angeles authorities May 6, 1982, on the local charges, she was described as the largest distributor of child pornography in the nation and was said to have made millions on her illicit operation.

Authorities had said she controlled 80 percent of a product considered untouchable by most pornography dealers because of the heavy legal penalties attached to it.

She was released from jail early this year on the previous charges when she posted $500,000 in bond. Authorities trying to arrest her again Thursday did not find her at her exclusive Wilshire-area home.

When she was arrested last May, Wilson had been on probation from a 1980 kiddie porn offense.

In the 1980 arrest, she had been given a suspended two-year prison sentence, was fined $3,750 and placed on three years probation.

When she was arrested last May, authorities said they found mailing lists of 30,000 names at her home.

Eugene Trolio, 42, who prosecutors had claimed shared a mailing list with Wilson, pleaded guilty last July 21 to one count of distributing child pornography and agreed to testify against her.

Wilson faces a maximum of 85 years in prison and a fine of $85,000 if she is convicted on the 15 federal counts.

Most of the counts alleged she had mailed child pornography to specific customers in Indianapolis, Buffalo, N.Y.; Ligonier, Pa.; Lebanon, Pa.; Lakewood, Colo.; and Springfield, Va.

However the names of the customers were actually fictitious names, and the mail was being picked up by government agents.

Last November she pleaded innocent to 15 counts of distributing obscene material. Later, the number of counts was reduced to 13- 10 felonies and three misdemeanors.

A divorcee who drove her children to a prestigious private school each day in a Rolls-Royce or Mercedes Benz, Wilson netted about $500,000 a year in her European-connected pornography ring, while at the same time collecting welfare, court papers have alleged.

Easier conviction of child pornographers hoped

City Attorney Burt Pines claimed Thursday that a precedent-setting pornography case will make it easier to convict persons who use children in sexually suggestive pictures.

His prediction came after two magazine distributors based in Sun Valley and the operator of a Hollywood adult bookstore pleaded “no contest” to violating state obscenity laws and were fined a total of $6,250.

Involved in the case was a 48-page magazine known as Lolitots, which displayed girls aged 7 to 13 in sexually suggestive’ poses.

The distributors’ attorneys, Pines said, had originally argued that the material was not obscene since the children were not shown in any ultimate sex act.

Pines said that the State Surpeme Court held last July that the magazine as a whole violated state law. After that, Lolitots began disappearing from the shelves of adult bookstores.

Instead, the crackdown caught Parliament News Inc, and World News Inc., (doing business as Pacific News) at 11085 Olinda Street, Sun Valley. Each was fined $2,000 plus a penalty assessment of $500.

Bernard Weisman, 49, of Northridge, was fined $1,000 plus $250 in penalties for his role as manager of the World Book and News Company in Hollywood.

Suspected distributors of kid pornography held

A 38-year-old Los Angeles woman purported to be one of the largest distributors of child pornography in the nation was arrested Thursday along with four other members of a child pornography ring, sheriff’s undercover deputies said.

Some 500 child pornographic films were seized by undercover deputies at the home of Katherine Wilson, of 1017 Mansfield Ave., Los Angeles, according to Lt. Robert Grimm of the sheriff’s vice squad.

At the same time, sheriff’s deputies arrested David R Cornwall, 31, of Hollywood; Abraham Susskind, 69, of West Hollywood; Lucius Wilson, 43, of Los Angeles, and James Talmadge, 32, of Burbank.

Sentences suspended for ‘kid porn’ ring

LOS ANGELES (AP) Three members of a “kiddie porn” film distribution ring were given suspended prison sentences, probation and fines Monday for selling obscene films imported from Denmark and other European countries.

The defendants pleaded no contest last month to charges stemming from distribution of movies with titles such as “How to Lure a School Boy” and “Little But Lewd.”

The three, Catherine Wilson, 40, her former husband, Lucius Wilson, 45, and David Cornwall, 34, were charged with one count each of conspiracy to distribute obscene matter and distributing child pornography.

They were given terms of two years in state prison which were suspended and three years probation. Superior Court Judge Gordon Ringer ordered Mrs. Wilson to pay a $3,750 fine and Wilson and Cornwall to pay $1,000 fines each.

A fourth defendant, Abraham Susskin, 72, had turned state’s evidence in the case. He was placed on three years probation and fined $500.

Deputy District Attorney Kirk Newkirk said he was disappointed that Mrs. Wilson, whom he described as the ring’s leader, was not sent to prison. “It was my feeling she should have gone to jail,” he said. “But I respect the judge’s decision.”

    Agent says officials ‘buy’ boys

NEW YORK (AP) – A prostitution rings sells 12-year-old boys to U.S. government officials for weekends of sex, then makes an even bigger profit by marketing the officials’ sex secrets to foreign agents, according to testimony at a state committee.

The State Senate Select Committee on Crime today continued its two-day hearing into the underworld of homosexual boy prostitution and pornography.

A customs agent testified today that 60 percent of all obscene materials coming into this country from overseas involves children who are 12 months to 13 years of age.

Special Agent Charles Koczka of the U.S. Customs Service office in New York said ****the majority of the obscene printed matter and films comes from Scandinavia, particularly Denmark.****

Koczka said the material, hand-carried by individuals arriving in New York, usually is filmed in the United States using American children and then sent overseas for production and distribution worldwide.

The agent said the problem could not be resolved “unless it starts at the top – the White House and the attorney general … and unless this problem is identified as a problem.”

The prostitution ring produces “millions, perhaps hundreds of millions” of dollars for organized crime, according to committee members, who also were to hear today from a New York porno theater operator, and editor of homosexual magazines and a psychotherapist.

“Most people concern themselves with female prostitution and pornography. I think the public is unaware of the extent of the exploitation of young boys,” said Committee Chairman Ralph J. Marino, who called it “a profitable and disgusting business.”

In testimony Monday, private investigator Dale Smith said British, Israeli and Soviet agents buy information about sexual preferences of male customers of call services that provide young boys in Washington.

Smith, working for the committee, said an accountant for five of the call services told him of the information sale. He refused to elaborate when questioned by reporters, but committee counsel Jeremiah McKenna said the information concerned “government officials.” He declined to be more specific.

“They’re making more money selling information than on the prostitution itself,” McKenna said.

In earlier testimony, a Washington detective, Anne Fisher, told of a nationwide prostitution network that employed boys as young as 12 years old who were ferried to six cities to engage in homosexual acts. Customers charged the cost of their encounters to their credit cards, she said.

The hearing is being held to determine the extent of the traffic in children.

JUDICIAL SHAMBLES FOR POLITICIAL AND FINANCIAL MOTIVES
    Jacqueline de Croÿ – 17/03/2010

Denial of justice even when the victims, the sellers and purchasers of child pornography are identified …

The search notices of the police Kennemerland have two pages titled “dader” (offenders in Dutch), numbered from 1 to 17. We only know the identity of the offender No. 9, trousers down on a photograph of the criminal category n°3*, which has illustrated the judicial dossier CORAL and a Brazilian child pornography magazine.

***This case started in 1977, the year following of the creation Coral, a community for psychotic and autistic children in the south of France. Claude Sigal, an educator of the anti-psychiatry movement, had invented a “sexual therapeutic activities”.*** A trainee, then minor of age, had murdered an 11-years-old boy, who died head drowned in a bucket of water. The autopsy revealed that the child had been sodomized. The young murderer and rapist was deemed “irresponsible” and interned in psychiatry, but four only years after, he was living again in the Coral.

***In 1982, Jean-Claude Krief, another trainee, discovered the Coral was a holiday destination for the heroes of the student revolution of May 68, but the hell of children reduced to silence by their handicap.*** He also discovered a suitcase of porn. The photograph No. 1 of the Coral was the photograph No. 9 of the Zandvoort case. It represents another boy 11-years-old during “sexual games” at the hotel of the village, with the magistrate who had ordered his internment in the Coral, according to Krief.

A six months enquiry ended-up with 342 arrest warrants, including a large number of personalities of May 68. The young voters had just brought the socialist party in power and Mitterrand who had given them his full trust. But the members of the community were so stoned that one of them, Jean-Noel Bardy, has admitted to the investigators having participated in “sexual activities” adding that “this sexual freedom was part of a new form of therapy”.

Gabriel Matzneff, novelist and columnist for Le Monde, said about his own arrest : “First there is the alleged international paedophile network, which is the obsession Judge Salzmann and some members of the BSP. It was during the Dugué trial that for the first time, the question of this fantasy network was issued. The Dugué trial: you remember? The defence witnesses were called, coincidentally, Rene Scherer and Gabriel Matzneff.”

***Jacques Dugué, a basketball coach, was therefore part of their club. A police search at a member of this club in Los Angeles had led to a letter from Dugué on the need to corrupt young people to ensure the permanence of the network.*** They thus become the “godfathers” of those ready to carry on for the money. ***Dugué was jailed since September 1978 with seven other criminals, for having delivered seventeen children to prostitution and provided child pornography to specialised magazines during four years.*** Police reports evoke collective scenes of sodomy, oral sex and scatology (referring to excrements), which had been “scripted” and filmed. The publication of these photographs therefore fell within publicity to sell these films. The teens were paid 100-FF (15-€). The youngest victim was a 3 years-old boy, others were 7 years old and 9 years old. When the children are so young, the money is given to their parents.

It was “a disgusting case. I have never seen such filth in my entire career, had then said a former inspector of the vice squad. Another police officer had said of Dugué: “It’s a crank, a pervert; he had already been in trouble with the law in Paris 7 years ago, for his insistence on diverting young boys.”

There was nothing to defend, but enough of friends journalists exposed to start a controversy in the press. These people were drugged to the bone and believed they had all rights. The dossier had become political, and they knew how to take advantage of the situation. Jean-Claude Krief was accused of attempting to blackmail the Minister Jack Lang, at the same time of the murder of his brother, Michel Krief. The main witness, in full mourning, was jailed in the same prison as Sigala and his gang of perverts, until he signed a false confession, which will be used to free the personalities.

The Coral case was tried in January 1986, when two other related cases appeared. Sigala and Marceau, had not hesitated to joined the network CRIES “Centre for Research and Information on Childhood and Sexuality” (1982-1986), though they had been indicted in the Coral case. The C.R.I.E.S. had transformed the UNICEF offices in Brussels into a child pornography studio, with a laboratory where 4,000 photos were developed. They illustrated their own magazine “L’espoir” (Hope) and sold the surplus of their production to Ulrich.

Further more, Marceau, in the fumes of drugs, had filed a complaint because the KRIPTEN network wanted to send one of “his” prostitutes on Uranus, after having passed in Manhattan. This meant in the paedo network language that the child was destined to be murdered in a snuff film.

Sigala, Marceau, and Bardy, the one who had proclaimed his “sexual activity” of “a new therapeutic” order, were sentenced to 3 years in prison, but with 2.5 years of probation. The sanction thus did not exceed the preventive detention of 3 to 4 months for the sexual abuse of handicapped children. Marceau will be subsequently indicted in the cases CRIES / UNICEF and KRIPTEN.

The case has become political and financial 1991, when Mitterrand has covered the biggest swindle of all time, placing the Ferrayé patents in the French Top Secret department. Billions of dollars will enable to buy the press and export the false miscarriages of justice abroad. Bribes reach 200 million dollars. All the rascals are scrambling to launder the stolen money, including paedophiles “cleared” in the Coral case.

The French counter-espionage service (DST) has found on February 19, 1997, the CORAL and KRIPTEN records hidden in the garage of Commander Christian Prouteau, the squadron leader of an “anti-terrorist cell”, with all the dossiers that had benefited from an illegal presidential intervention. Prouteau was prosecuted for the “theft and concealment of documents classified top secret.” He had stolen these dossiers two years earlier, when Chirac replaced Mitterrand at the French presidency. Captain Paul Barril, deputy of Prouteau, declared at a public hearing on April 29, 1997: “I remember we had been alerted to stop the investigation into the paedophile ring ‘Coral’ because of the personalities involved.”

The counter-espionage service kept a few documents they thought of being covered by the “Top Secret”. Paul Bouchet, the president of the National Security interceptions, was appointed to decide which were the documents that had to be kept secret for questions of national security. Only two documents relating to telephone tapping are recognized as a “Top Secret”.

The Ferrayé dossier is thus recognized accessible to Mr Ferrayé for the defence of his rights in court, but as money has no political colour, it remains inaccessible. Chirac had even the gall to offer $ 800 million to Mr Ferrayé to “compensate” the hundreds of billions that the corrupt officials of the government Mitterrand had stolen from him. Sarkozy also closes his eyes on the phenomenal amounts that continue to feed all the slush funds, and save the robbers, paedophile or not, from the sentences provided by law for their crimes.

A note of Prouteau to Mitterrand testifies on the presidential concept of the right of defence, concerns Jacques Verges, the lawyer who defended Jean-Claude Krief. “September 1982. In accordance with your instructions, I had the research carried out to verify the information you were given on the lawyer. The deals are effectively treated by this gentleman, and, as you supposed so, the fulfilment of the agreement will be concluded imminently. I actually give this precision: we keep in contact on this matter and, if it should proceed as planned, there are strong chances that we can succeed. Unless new instructions on your behalf, we will thus pursue this matter up to the end. Squadron Leader Prouteau.”

When in 1998, the NGO Morkhoven exposes the database of Ulrich, it exposes a multitude of dossier downstream and upstream of Coral case, which has never left the top secret department, despite the conclusions of Mr Bouchet. Indeed, Sigala, the inventor of the “sexual therapies”, appears in the address book of the network matched to the code “S-24” and Marceau matched to the code “27”. The photographs of the magistrate trousers down, had been sold to a Brazilian magazine and was still for sale in 1998, but in a cheap category “déjà vu”.

On only 2,800 of the 93,000 images in the dossier, five pictures of Dugué were sold to three Dutch magazines and one Danish magazine. One of these photographs was published in “Pissing Lolita” (p.21) and another in “Lolita Special Colors” (p.23) and two in “Altes Lolita”. (p.16) Another photo has been divided in half and sold “Boy Lovers”, released in 1978 (p.23). Lindquist, code S-23, sold three photos in the Dutch magazine “Young Giants,” published in 1976 (p.21 – p.23), and one in “Felix”, published in 1991 (p.15).

Judge Ringot is the author of a real judicial shambles. She scatters fragments of information on the godfathers of the various branches of a 40 years old network, from one page to another, without any order, then ejects them from the dossier without the slightest justification.

Dugué is prosecuted in Haute Savoie for the sexual abuse of the two son of a teenager he had corrupted twenty years earlier. Linquist was also prosecuted outside of the procedure Zandvoort, for the abuse of five children aged 6 to 15 years and procuring pictures of a paedophile nature, between 1993 and 2000, but not that of 1991!

Bernard Alapetite, also shown in the Coral case, and Jean-Manuel Vuillaume recognized a large part of their production. Only Alexander is recognized on the photo n ° 130, page 14, published in the magazine “L’enfant impossible” in 1997. The photograph n ° 223 – page 23 also appears in the same magazine, under the signature of A. Wood, JM Jacquemard Senecal and Vuillaume, as well as in the “OK Magazine” of May 1997, as published by Pojkart, Lübeck, Germany.

Alexander photograph will be assigned to the publisher “Jean-Manuel Vuillaume Diffusion” (RCS 320315609), which had put its keys under the mat in 1989, with a turnover of 2,316,000 FF (353,000 euros). Vuillaume and Alapetite had been jailed, the first one for producing the films of his company TORO BRAVO, the second one for selling them through his magazines.

The Dutch “OK Magazine” belongs to the openly paedophile association MARTIJN, who is also in the address book of the network. A former president of Martijn is co-founder of the Dutch paedophile political party which has just been dissolved. The PNVD, ” Party for Charity, Freedom & Diversity”, was demanding the legalization of drugs and pornography involving children as from the age of 12 years but has not obtained the 570 votes needed to stand for election.

The French Justice has decided that Vuillaume could continue to receive royalties for his production of pictures of naked children via the MARTIJN Association, which continues to offer its OK Magazine of May 1997 on its website, what is a political decision. In 2007 though, the Dutch royal family has obtained in the framework of an extreme urgency procedure against MARTIJN, the withdrawal of the photograph of one of their little princess who was dressed, from its website.

    Schenectady Gazette – 27 August 1984
Denmark Probes Child Probe After U.S. TV Report

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Police said yesterday that an investigation of possible mass production of child pornography has been ordered after a U.S. television report claimed Denmark is a major exporter of such material.

A program shown in the United States Friday and on Danish television Saturday suggested that Denmark and the Netherlands are the world’s largest producers of child pornography.

Reaction to the program prompted Justice Minister Erik Ninn-Hansen to call for an immediate investigation and possible steps to tighten Danish legislation.

“I do feel it calls for closer investigation when you learn that there is an export [of child pornography] from this country,” Ninn-Hansen said yesterday.

“The case in question must be investigated and we must, in that connection, also consider whether an amendment of existing legislation is required.”

But Ninn-Hansen said he would be wary of a “rash” imposition of censorship. He said the government should not attempt to decree what adults should read or see, but should make certain the law protects children from sexual abuse.

Denmark was one of the world’s first nations to legalize adult pornography, when it adopted such legislation in 1972, but a law passed in 1981 forbids the manufacture, possession or dissemination of sexually explicit material involving children under 15.

Annemette Moeller of the Copenhagen police department, who was interviewed on the U.S. program, said yesterday that she was awaiting further details from the American reporters to decide whether warrants should be filed against the alleged porno dealers.

The film indicated that the reporters, posing as wholesale buyers, used hidden cameras and microphones while Danish pornography dealers talked with them about their lucrative trade.

Moeller said the program did not make it clear whether the child pornography in question had been produced in Denmark.

Exports to the United States and other countries would come under an international postal convention against distribution of pornography, she added.

Alleged pornography dealers appearing on the television program included Willy and Laila Strauss, owners of the Blue Movie company.

Last year, police confiscated some 10,000 magazines, videotapes and playing cards involving child pornography from the Blue Movie firm, and Strauss was fined $600.

Strauss said yesterday that his firm has no more child pornography in stock or production. He said he had never been involved in arranging photo or film sessions with children, but he saw nothing wrong in child pornography.

“The number of sexual crimes against children has increased since child pornography was banned three years ago,” he said. [Yes, he really said this and they printed it in a newspaper!]

Telephone calls to COQ, a publishing house specializing in homosexual literature in Holback, west of Copenhagen, went unanswered. It was described on the program as a wholesaler in child pornography.

    Gadsden Times – 1 September 1984
Danish publishers charged after program on child porno

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Three Danish publishers were charged Friday with producing child pornography, the latest action against pornography since a U.S. television documentary labeled Denmark as a major supplier to the American market.

Police in suburban Holbaek identified the three only as managing directors of COQ International, a printing and publishing house specializing in homosexual material. It was not clear if the three were being held by police.

Chief of Police Christian Peterson said the three were charged with printing and distributing pornography involving models under the age 15, the official age of consent in Denmark.

Police searched COQ International’s facilities Monday, and found examples of child pornography in a sampling of about 2,500 magazines, Petersen said. The program had described the publishing house as a wholesaler in child pornography.

“It appears, however, that the material was photographed abroad, not in Denmark, so the maximum penalty in this case would be a fine,” Petersen said.

The actual use of children for pornographic purposes is punishable under Danish law with up to 10 years in prison, but so far, no charges have been reported in Denmark.

Friday’s arraignments brought to four the number of Danes charged with dealing in child porn since the parts of the NBC program “The Silent Shame” were aired Saturday on Danish television. The program was shown in the United States the same day.

The first person charged was Copenhagen pornography dealer Willy Strauss, who allegedly admitted having sold a magazine that was given to police by the NBC reporters, Chuck Collins and Mark Nyakan.

The NBC reporters have been criticized for recording footage using hidden cameras and microphones while posing as potential buyers of child pornography. Reaction to the program’s claim that Denmark and the Netherlands are major exporters of child pornography prompted Justice Minister Erik Ninn-Hansen last week to call for an immediate investigation and possible steps to tighten Danish legislation.

    Cxxxxxxxx V. Fxxxxxxx
    v.
The ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF the ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW ORLEANS, et al.

Court of Appeal of Louisiana, Fourth Circuit.
    September 30, 1993.

Plaintiff Cxxxxxxxxx V. Fxxxxxxx appeals two trial court judgments. First, he seeks reversal of a September 1, 1992 judgment granting an exception of prescription on his claims for sexual abuse and clergy malpractice against defendants ***Dino Cinel***, St. Rita’s Church of New Orleans, the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Twin City Fire Insurance Company, United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company, and International Insurance Company. Second, he seeks reversal of a September 18, 1992 judgment granting a motion for summary judgment, dismissing from the suit defendants the Roman Catholic Church, Twin City Fire Insurance, United States Fidelity, and International Insurance. For the reasons discussed below, we affirm the trial court judgment granting the exception of prescription on the sexual abuse and clergy malpractice claims, but partially reverse the judgment granting the motion for summary judgment in favor of the church defendants.

    Facts
Fxxxxxxx’s suit is based on occurrences growing out of his relationship with defendant Cinel, a former Catholic priest, which relationship allegedly began in February of 1982, when Fxxxxxxx was 17 years old, and continued until late 1985 or early 1986. In his original petition, Fxxxxxxx claims that during that period Cinel “performed illicit acts upon the petitioner” which “caused petitioner to suffer severe physical and mental damage,” damage which was “worsened” because it continued for a prolonged period of time. Additionally, Fxxxxxx claims that he was defamed and that his privacy was invaded when Cinel marketed videotapes and photographs of him for publication.

During the relevant time period, Cinel served as a priest at St. Rita Church, which is under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fxxxxxx named both the church and the archdiocese defendants in his suit, claiming, among other things, that the church defendants provided Cinel with the “instrumentalities to conduct said illicit activity” and that the church defendants knew or should have known of the activities and taken “appropriate measures” to correct the situation. In his fifth supplemental and amended petition, Fxxxxxxx also claims that the archdiocese is liable for clergy malpractice for its negligence in “screening, hiring, training and supervis[ing]” Cinel. Various insurance companies were also named as defendants.

In most contra non valentem cases, the court does not have the benefit of a transcript of the exact moment in time at which the harm or wrong is discovered by the plaintiff. This case is unusual in that we do have a transcript of the exact moment when plaintiff discovered that Cinel had sold his photos to the Danish magazine. The transcript of Tape 3 at the moment in time when the police officers put the copy of the magazine in front of Cxxxx Fxxxxxxx provides:

(Rustling of papers, period of silence)

    CF What is this?

    P You tell me.

CF Don’t do this to fuckin’ me, please.

P It’s gotta be done, bro, it’s already done, it’s all over.

(sound of sobbing) That’s the other side of these people. That’s how he bought the camp. Where do you think he got all the money from, Cxxxx, huh?

CF I want him in prison. I’ll nail this mother-fucker, I swear. If ya’ll don’t I will, OK.

CF That’s all I’ve been doing is telling the truth.

P We told you that we were here to try to put the guy away. And we want to do our job. We told you that last time you were here, we told you again this time. That’s what we’re trying to do. That’s the end result of everything, that is the result.

    CF Where’s …

P This is a magazine that’s sold all over the world, right? Um, hm. It comes out of Denmark. C.O.Q. is a international distributor of child pornography. This is the monthly issue of a magazine called “Dreamboy,” OK. This was your magazine. This was you. The whole magazine is you. C.O.Q. international distributor of child pornography.

    CF That’s in Santa Cruz.

P Alright, that’s what we want you to do.

CF That’s on the—this is the condominium in Biloxi that we went to …

P I want you to write on each photograph. Just take your time, look through it if you will, please.

CF My spelling ain’t that good.

P Oh, no, no, no, you know how to spell Biloxi? We’ll spell, you know … Where was this picture at first? This start off with the cover. Start with the cover first. Let’s take them all. Yeah, let’s do them all. What about this picture here, the 4-page one. Do you know where that’s at? The T-shirt, you had a black T-shirt on.

    CF That’s in California.

P California? In other words, you think it’s the same, is that in California? Do you think it’s the same as that?

    CF Exactly.

P You can see the palm trees and stuff in the background.

CF That’s on the Santa Cruz beach.

P Santa Cruz beach in California.

CF That’s Santa Cruz, yeah. Santa Cruz on the beach.

    P On the beach? And there’s a few other…

CF I don’t believe this shit, man.

P What’d you think he was doing?

    CF (Unintelligible)

P Where do you think he gets all the money to buy these houses, on State St., on Tonti, or apartment complex? Why do you think he turned that video machine on the second you walked in the door? Every time and left it on the entire time. The entire time, even when ya’ll were watching TV? And eating dinner? He was waiting for a sexual encounter to take place.

CF I guess I would be wrong right now if I said that he deserves the electric chair. He deserves death.

P Well we got to do something to put him in jail. We want to get his ass into jail. (Pages 9-12).

    * * * * * *

Attachment 5 is the psychological evaluation by Dr. Gerald Wiener. Cxxxx Fxxxxxxx was referred to Dr. Wiener by his attorney and the Archdiocese paid Dr. Wiener’s fee. Dr. Wiener stated in his report:

The major reason for referral involves the patient having had an affair with a clergyman, on the lasted from age 17 to age 20. He was very much in love with this clergyman and the affair was consensual. However, he felt the clergyman had betrayed him—in that pornographic pictures were taken and sold “for one million dollars.” The patient, consequent to general IQ, does not seem to have number concept—and he uses terms such as “one million” and “president of the university” not as a need to exaggerate but he does not understand concepts such as “university positions”, large sums of money. In any event, the patient claims that pornographic literature was taken and sold—and he feels betrayed. In addition, his clergyman/lover wanted him to engage in sexual affairs with another young man for photographic purposes.

    * * * * * *

By the patient’s account, it is not so much that he is homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual—it is as if he has a vast degree of emptiness and lacks an identity—he will attach to any figure who will provide him with reassurance, love, comfort—traits that appear to have been lacking throughout his formative years. He informed me that his former lover is now the president of Newcomb college, and I would submit that he is probably in their employ—in a lower level academic position. The patient does not resent seduction, he resents having been betrayed and seems to be literally crushed by the episode—both by his wife leaving him currently as well as the pornographic picture sale and other sexual events surrounding the ex-clergyman in question.”

Pedophiles and Priests: Anatomy of a Contemporary Crisis
    By Philip Jenkins

    [Page 45]
In March 1991 a New Orleans television station broadcast an expose about a local priest, Dino Cinel, of the parish of Saint Rita’s. The affair dated back to late 1988 when large numbers of pornographic videos had been found in his rectory, and because most of them concerned pedophile themes, their mere possession constituted a criminal offense. Cinel had also produced pornographic videos and photographs depicting sexual encounters between himself and several teenage boys, and the scandal was intensified because these had occurred in the parish rectory. However, three months passed before church authorities handed them over to a law enforcement agency. Even then no action had been taken because the local district attorney was reluctant to embarrass what he termed “Holy Mother the Church.” Shortly afterward, Cinel had been quietly transferred from his parochial responsibilities to a well-paying academic job in the City University of New York system. In December 1989 another former Catholic priest named John Bauer was arrested for his role in manufacturing child pornography videos.

There were several other arrests of priests in those years: Thomas Chleboski in Arlington, Virginia, was accused of abusing a thirteen-year-old boy; Father Richard Lavigne in Shelburne Falls, Massasschusetts; Father Earl Bierman in Newport, Kentucky. In Maryland, Father Thomas Smith committed suicide after charges emerged that he had fondled a boy in his parish. After his death, the diocesan authorities admitted that he had confessed to molesting other boys during the 1960s. One Georgia case at this time was especially damaging because it aroused ancient suspicions of the cosmopolitan and un-American nature of the Catholic church. In 1989 and 1990 a priest named ***Anton Mowat*** was under investigation for molestation when he left the country to be sheltered by the church in his home country of England. This was denounced by the local press as a sinister manifestation of the use of international links to evade justice.

    New York Times – December 26, 1981
COMPUTER AID FOR ‘NATURAL’ BIRTH CONTROL

A prototype of a bedside computer intended to improve the accuracy and reliability of ”natural family planning” is due to arrive in this country in the next several weeks for clinical tests.

Natural family planning avoids pills, barriers or spermicides, and the term encompasses methods of birth control endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church. The computer may eventually allow millions of Catholics to practice such planning with increased confidence but without disobeying the church’s ban on all forms of ”artificial contraception.”

The computer also may help millions of other women who want to prevent pregnancy but who object to artificial methods of birth control, such as the pill, diaphragm and intrauterine device.

The computer keeps an extremely accurate record of a woman’s temperature. The basal body temperature and the sympto-thermal methods of natural family planning involve charting the slight changes in a woman’s body temperature to determine periods of fertility. The computer will signal with a green light when a woman is infertile and can proceed with unprotected intercourse.

Dr. Robert Abrams, a reproductive physiologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville, who helped develop the computer, said the new device should reduce the complexity of natural family planning methods, which now depend on charting temperature shifts as well as daily inspections of the amount and consistency of cervical mucus.

Since the battery-powered device can help women predict when they are fertile, it therefore also may benefit couples who are having difficulty conceiving, Dr. Abrams said.

Once it goes into mass production, the computer, which is about the size of a pocket calculator, is expected to cost about $40. The inventors expect eventually to miniaturize the computer, reducing it still further in size.

The device was invented by a team of three Britons and an American, Dr. Abrams, under the auspices of the World Health Organization. It is the result of more than a year of collaborative studies by scientists and the University of Florida’s College of Medicine and the Clinical Research Center in Harrow, England.

*****The Rev. Anton Mowat, a spokesman for the Catholic Church in England and Wales*****, said the new computer is ”perfectly acceptable for use by Catholic couples as it does not interfere with the process of the transmission of life. It is not essentially different from any of the other methods which are acceptable to the church, and, in fact, it is obviously easier and sounds more accurate.”

When the computer’s invention was announced last spring, Dr. Abrams said he expected the device to be reliable, provided it is used properly and that the woman abstains from unprotected intercourse during her fertile periods. The computer is programmed to make adjustments for natural fluctuations in body temperature and for irregular menstrual cycles. It cannot make adjustments for a fever, however.

The device has already proven reliable in recording the fertility cycles of 500 women who participated in preliminary tests, Dr. Abrams said. But Cynthia Green, deputy director for education and public policy at the Population Crisis Committee, a group that monitors international population and family-planning programs, noted that identifying the fertility cycle does not by itself prevent pregnancy. Women then must abstain from unprotected intercourse, often for as long as two weeks. ”Many couples can’t tolerate long periods of abstinence,” she said.

Many marriage counselors who support natural family planning say that its methods promote more equitable, cooperative marital relationships because they require the male to share responsibility in preventing pregnancy. Doctors also note that such planning methods are entirely natural and have no physical side effects.

The computer prototype unit that is scheduled to arrive in Florida was manufactured in Kent, England. The computer will also be tested worldwide in research centers selected by the World Health Organization.
